National Tree Day in 2019 was at the beginning of November and we’d been hearing such a lot about it on Instagram from the Woodland Trust that Liv and I decided that we should plant some new trees at the Forage Yard. But I wasn’t really in the mood to think big, so as Liv had spotted some rather non-spectacular little shrubby trees, but whose flowers have such a delicious scent plus lots of red berries in the autumn, the decision was easily made and my mind made up! I ordered ten to be delivered as I wasn’t too keen to get potted-up ones from a garden centre. My soil is so poor here – chalk and flint – that bare-roots work much better.

So planting day arrived – 1st December! The trouble is that now I can’t quite remember where they all are. I’ve now gone around the garden tying purple wool to the main stems!

The Wayfarer Tree got its name as it was pretty ubiquitous along tracks and pathways frequented by travellers and journeymen! Its proper name is Viburnum Lantana.

So fingers crossed they start to grow well. Then maybe the crowds will arrive to make paths all along the boundaries of my garden!
