My Sussex hedging is turning out to be everything I had hoped – it is creating a habitat perfect for wildlife. All that hard work three years ago is paying off. The hedge is dense, lush, peaceful and safe! I’m not sure that I have birds nesting in there yet, but a couple of blackbirds have taken up residence. In the autumn I pile the fallen leaves all along the bottom of the hedge in the hope I may encourage all manner of wildlife to take refuge there or hibernate. so every time I get round there with the mower I have noticed that the leaves are scattered all over the grass – as seen in the photo. So these have to be raked back under the hedging before continuing to mow. Perhaps it is the work of the blackbirds that I see scurrying along the length of the hedge every time I walk past.
