There’s nothing better than picking your own dinner free of charge! We walked from Itchenor to West Wittering to avoid the congestion of cars and people! It was still pretty busy at the East Head end of the beach but the sea looked wonderful.

The protected leeward side of East Head showed the pinky green tufts of Common Glasswort – more commonly known to you or I and Waitrose as Samphire! I’m not really sure we are allowed to forage here – so we left the plants’ roots intact and just broke off a few shoots to wash and blanch in boiling water – extremely tasty and highly nutritious – full of mineral salts.

The name Glasswort is a reminder of what these plants used to be used for – they played a role in glass- making – baking them in pyres to make a mineral rich ash.
