What joy! To receive a bunch of lily-of-the-valley for my birthday! They look and smell divine… I have a few growing in a tub in the courtyard but nothing like a glorious as these. Maybe they don’t thrive in my garden because they prefer acidic soil and of course the soil here is chalky and poor.

Its other names are May Bells, Our Lady’s Tears and Mary’s Tears. The old English name is Glovewort – and used to create a salve for sore hands. It can be very poisonous if eaten…. 

In 1956 Christian Dior produced a fragrance based on this, his favourite flower – Diorissimo
