Here are a couple of pics of the ‘Lavant Scarifying Team’! We met up a couple of times in late October and at the beginning of November to rake as hard as we could to scarify the area. This was in the hope that by revealing more soil, wild flower seeds, normally repressed by the strength of the grass would be able to start to flourish. Another reason for scarifying was that we had decided to sow Yellow Rattle in December. Yellow Rattle is widely used to help suppress the regrowth of grass in the early spring – the idea behind this it to give space for wild flowers to emerge.We have since found out that this was possibly not the best plan. Botany experts have commented that we should be trying to encourage the native wild flowers rather introduce foreign seeds – in this case from Kent. Still, having bought the seed we decided to go ahead. So on one of those hardly-daylight days in late December we strew the seed ….
