During the late summer of 2019 a few of us decided that the time was ripe to start rewilding St Nics graveyard in Mid Lavant. We’d start with a few babysteps at a time – in the knowledge that we were likely to be viewed with some suspicion by the stalwart members of the PCC. Quite rightly too – there’s nothing worse than racing in with all guns blazing and ‘uprooting’ a system which had worked adequately for many years. So with the blessing of our vicar, David, we have set aside just a very small area of the graveyard. During the autumn of 2019 we scarified the area – raked out all the grass we could and revealed as much soil as possible in order to allow enough space for dormant wild flower species to spring forth into life!!
We informed Chichester District Council, who undertake the regular strimming of the graveyard, to ignore that sliver of graveyard and then decided that we should tell the world of our plans….. otherwise locals walking through might just think that area had been forgotten about. For the next couple of years, before the flowers gain confidence to grow, that area may look rather unkempt.
So a sign gets made and wooden spoons stuck into the grassy area to remind everyone what we’re up to…..
