The clocks went back last night which gives me a little more time to sort the house, clean the kitchen and start to prepare lemon polenta cake and cheese and courgette scones with chive butter. I dig out a prettily embroidered tablecloth made by my Grandma Ella and teacups and saucers. I take Rogie with me when I visit Christine and Alan to let them know how the trip to Uruguay went. They are not really surprised when I tell them that Tom will be coming home with me after Cape Town. Alan said he understood how easy it would be to get caught up in the ‘excitement’ and ‘romance’ – he said he felt it too when he went to visit the boat in Gosport. We chatted for ages about how ‘clever’ Clipper is, in getting people to buy into the dream of a challenge to change your life forever. I’m not doubting for one moment that this is true for some of the Clipperites, but for many, I think they get so sucked into the idea that they wouldn’t even contemplate questioning the rationale behind it. Tom is really far too bright for Clipper – those with enquiring minds must surely query what they are doing. Particularly those going all the way round. One leg is a great experience but more ??? Christine feels it is brave to stop and I’m inclined to agree – it takes a brave person to openly admit that it is not for them.
I have plenty of time to enjoy before the Lavant History Group arrive and we all set off for Goodwood. Richard and Shirley have joined us too – so we are nine in total. The house though is chocca! And I have to dodge other groups – I don’t suppose it is noticed but I don’t feel I am doing a particularly great tour, but two hours later we are all leaving as the house closes and everyone is bursting with questions. Tea works really well, Christine has brought a cake too and this we use as Caroline’s Birthday cake. She seems really touched and happy. We discuss John Spershott!! What did he really do? Was he made a scapegoat for someone else? The Duke? Ha ha! Imaginations are running riot…..
I run Richard and Shirley home – then sit relaxing and looking up things for hours before bed. An excellent day and beautiful sunshine too
