Beech trees have upward turning branches to encourage rainwater to run down all the branches and onto the trunk and then gets fed straight into the ground directly beneath the tree so that the roots can absorb all the water.

Pine trees in this country are still stuck in the time warp of thinking that they will get engulfed with snow and so have downward turning branches to allow the snow to slip off easily and not weigh the tree down to breaking point. Indirectly however this means that rainwater falls onto the ground out of reach of the roots of the pine tree and so it is often thirsty.
